White Stick IX - 1997 - Venue Rathmines - LCUA won by 36 runs (Series 5-4)

Posted in The White Stick Trophy

White Stick VIII saw another thumping for victory for the LCUA, taking the overall lead in the series 5-4. There are no contemporary reports available, but looking back from a distance of 16 years, three names very much stand out from the Leinster performance.

Although we are missing a few of the scorecards from before this match, it seems as if Jim McGeehan scored a majestic 68 on debut, as Leinster ran up 161 from 25 overs. NIACU may have fancied their chances at this stage, but the combined talents of David Walsh and Ray Cutland ran through the upper order, Walsh taking 3-28 (from 13 overs!) and Cutland 3-70 (from 17 overs!)

Times have changed - you need to be playing a Test match these days to bowl 17 overs. The name of the LCUA captain that day is not recorded, but he woke up that morning in a determined mood!
